About the Artist
Hello! My name is Katheryn Sutton and I reside in Cochrane, Alberta. I love Alberta and living in the foothills and viewing the mountains is like jet fuel for painting landscapes and Wildlife. When I paint animals or landscapes I use my own interpretation of bold colours , imaginative composition and I look to put one unexpected element in each painting. I love when the viewer picks up on it and finds their own interpretation or feeling of what it means to them. That’s when the painting gives them a special connection whether it be an emotion or maybe just a place where they are seeking to go. I started out as an acrylic painter but switched to oils and I sometimes do the underpainting in acrylics but oil is always the finished result. My paintings are always evolving and I like to try new things. That’s what keeps my work fresh and by trying new colours, techniques, or subject matter keeps me growing as an artist and it is so much fun. I too am learning that less is more. When I paint a bear in the wild I don’t need to capture every detail of water on their fur or every cloud in the sky, that’s up to the viewer to finish the story. There is a quote from Brian Rutenberg a New York abstract painter who said…” regardless of whether it is representational or abstract , if your viewer can identify and describe everything in your painting , than something’s wrong” . An eye not told what to see, sees more.
